It was first released in Japan on July 15, 1983, and later launched in North America in 198515. The NES is credited with revitalizing the American gaming industry after the video game crash of 19835. Landmark games such as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda became major franchises on the NES35. The NES used a "Control Deck" and "Game Paks" to differentiate itself from the struggling video game market at the time5.
